Kampo Traditional Herbal Medicines

Japanese Kampo medicines
Kampo, a traditional Japanese medicine, is grounded in unique theories and therapeutic practices that originated from traditional Chinese medicine. These remedies are composed of herbal ingredients derived from plants, animals, and minerals. Kampo was introduced to Japan from China between the fifth and sixth centuries, but over time, Japan has developed its own distinct system through extensive empirical study.
In contemporary Japan, Kampo is widely used not only in medical treatment and preventive medicine but also in daily healthcare and fitness routines as an alternative to modern Western medicine. Many Japanese doctors prefer Kampo over conventional prescription drugs due to its safety profile, as it rarely causes serious contraindications or side effects. While licensed medical professionals prescribe Kampo drugs for medical purposes, some are available over the counter at pharmacies and drug stores. Currently, 86.3% of Japanese physicians prescribe Kampo medicines, highlighting their widespread acceptance in medical practice. Scientific research within the framework of evidence-based medicine has validated the effectiveness of Kampo.
