How are Tylosin injections 200 mg/ml used for cats and dogs?
Tylosin injections for pets
Tylosin for pets is used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections affecting the respiratory tract and soft tissues. Veterinarians also use tylosin in selected cases of persistent diarrhea. The formulation and route of administration depend on the condition being treated.
An injection delivers the prescribed dose without requiring the animal to swallow medicine. This can be useful for cats and dogs that refuse oral treatment.
How the medicine controls bacteria
Tylosin belongs to the macrolide family of antibiotics for animals. It attaches to bacterial ribosomes, the structures that assemble proteins. By blocking protein production, it slows bacterial growth and multiplication, helping the animal’s immune system control the infection.
Its antibacterial activity includes many Gram-positive bacteria and Mycoplasma organisms. Unlike penicillins, which interfere with cell walls, tylosin acts on protein production. This allows it to act against Mycoplasma, which has no cell wall.
Why veterinarians use tylosin for certain cases of diarrhea
A study called Tylosin-Responsive Chronic Diarrhea in Dogs describes 14 dogs with longstanding diarrhea that had previously improved with tylosin. During oral treatment, diarrhea resolved within three days in all 14 dogs and within 24 hours in most. These findings demonstrate symptom control in dogs already known to respond to the medicine; the study examined oral treatment rather than injections.
Another article called Diarrhea in Kittens makes a useful distinction: stool consistency can improve during antibiotic treatment even when an underlying infection remains. This explains why the veterinarian considers stool changes alongside test results and the kitten’s overall condition when assessing treatment.
Package details: 100 ml bottle
A multidose bottle containing 100 ml of injectable solution. The bottle holds many individual doses; a small animal receives only the volume calculated for its body weight.
Active components: tylosin
Each millilitre contains 200 mg of tylosin.
Therapeutic effect:
Control of bacterial infections involving organisms within tylosin’s antibacterial range. Depending on the diagnosis and product, injectable treatment may be used for respiratory or soft-tissue infections.
Antibiotics for pets are selected according to the condition being treated. Tylosin’s use for chronic diarrhea is a separate clinical application, most commonly involving oral treatment.
Dosage and administration:
One labeled regimen for a 200 mg/ml injectable product that includes cats and dogs is 5–10 mg/kg, injected into a muscle once daily for five to seven days. This equals 0.025–0.05 ml/kg. For example, a 4 kg animal would receive 20–40 mg in 0.1–0.2 ml.
These figures provide a general reference. Follow your veterinarian’s instructions for the prescribed product, dose and treatment duration. Injections should be administered by a veterinarian or someone trained and instructed by one.
Contraindications and precautions:
- Tell the veterinarian about any previous allergy to tylosin or other macrolide antibiotics.
- Pain or inflammation may occur at the injection site. Reduced appetite or digestive upset can also occur.
- Mention liver or kidney disease and any medicines your pet currently receives so the veterinarian can account for them.
Contact the veterinarian if your pet develops a reaction during treatment with this pet antibiotic.
