Amoxicillin injections for cats and dogs
Amoxicillin for pets is used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, soft tissues, respiratory tract and urinary tract. Long-acting injectable formulations offer a practical option for cats and dogs that resist tablets or spit out oral medicine. The injection delivers the prescribed dose without relying on the animal to swallow it.
How the medicine destroys bacteria
Amoxicillin belongs to the penicillin family of antibiotics for animals. It blocks the enzymes bacteria need to build strong cell walls. As the bacteria grow and divide, their weakened walls break down, killing the cells.
Its antibacterial range includes Streptococcus species, Pasteurella species and some strains of E. coli. However, certain bacteria produce beta-lactamase, an enzyme that destroys amoxicillin before it can work. Amoxicillin alone does not overcome this resistance; laboratory testing can identify whether another medicine is needed.
What makes the injection long-acting?
LA stands for long-acting. The injectable suspension releases amoxicillin gradually from the injection site into the bloodstream. This matters because amoxicillin’s effectiveness depends on maintaining an adequate concentration over time, rather than reaching a brief, high peak.
The study Pharmacokinetics of Amoxicillin in the Cat, published in 2025, provides a concrete example. After six healthy cats received amoxicillin under the skin at 15 mg/kg, the median peak blood concentration was 10.3 mg/L, reached at a median of two hours. Estimated bioavailability was 69%, meaning approximately two-thirds of the injected dose reached the systemic circulation. The researchers confirmed that slow absorption prolonged the drug’s presence in the blood.

Dosage and administration:
The dose and injection schedule must follow the specific product’s instructions. General recommendations are to use 15 mg/kg, repeated once after 48 hours. The veterinarian determines the dose, injection route and timing of any repeat treatment based on the animal’s weight, condition and the formulation used. The long-acting preparation releases the medicine gradually, allowing longer intervals between doses. Administration should be performed by a veterinarian or someone trained and instructed by one.
Contraindications and precautions:
Do not administer the medicine to an animal with a known allergy to amoxicillin or its other ingredients. Injection-site irritation can occur, and allergic reactions may occasionally be serious. Tell the veterinarian about kidney disease, previous antibiotic reactions and any current medicines before treatment.
