Are Amoxiclear tablets 100 mg effective for bacterial infections in cats and dogs?
Amoxicillin tablets for pets
Amoxicillin for pets is used to treat bacterial infections, including infections of the skin. Tablets allow owners to give prescribed treatment at home without repeated injections. Each tablet contains a measured amount of medicine, while the number given per dose depends on the animal’s weight.
Amoxiclear tablets from Japan are approved for bacterial skin infections caused by staphylococci in cats and dogs. These bacteria can infect the skin and contribute to pustules, crusting and inflammation.
How the medicine destroys bacteria
Amoxicillin belongs to the penicillin family of antibiotics for animals. It blocks the enzymes bacteria need to build their cell walls. As bacteria grow and divide, their weakened walls rupture, causing the cells to die.
Some staphylococci produce penicillinase, an enzyme that breaks down amoxicillin. This explains why the medicine can work against one bacterial infection but fail against another with similar symptoms. Testing a sample from the affected skin helps the veterinarian identify resistance and choose an appropriate pet antibiotic.
How tablets work after swallowing
After a tablet is swallowed, amoxicillin is absorbed from the digestive tract into the bloodstream. It then travels to tissues throughout the body. Regular dosing helps maintain the concentrations needed to act against bacteria as the body eliminates the medicine between doses.
The 2025 study Pharmacokinetics of Amoxicillin in the Cat illustrates this process. In six healthy cats given oral amoxicillin at approximately 10 mg/kg, the median peak blood concentration was 4.4 mg/L, with a median time to peak of 2.5 hours.
Package details: 200 tablets
Active components: amoxicillin
Therapeutic effect:
Treatment of bacterial skin infections caused by amoxicillin-sensitive staphylococci in cats and dogs.
Antibiotics for pets do not treat viruses, fungi or parasites.
Dosage and administration:
The usual recommended oral dose is 10–20 mg/kg per dose, twice daily for five days. For example, a 5 kg animal would require 50–100 mg per dose. The veterinarian determines the prescribed amount within this range and explains how to measure it using the supplied tablets.
Give the medicine according to the prescribed schedule.
Contraindications and precautions:
- Tell the veterinarian about any previous reaction to amoxicillin, other penicillins or tablet ingredients.
- Vomiting, soft stools, diarrhoea or reduced appetite may occur. Contact the veterinarian if these develop during treatment.
- Amoxiclear 100 formulation contains fish-derived peptides, which should be considered for animals with fish allergies.
Store the tablets away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture, and keep them out of children’s reach.
