How does Hibix ointment R help with skin and ear inflammation in cats and dogs?
Hibix ointment for pets
Hibix combines an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, an antifungal medicine and two antibiotics in one topical preparation. It is used for eczema, outer-ear inflammation and bacterial or fungal skin infections in cats and dogs.
This anti-inflammation treatment for pets acts directly at the affected area. Its ingredients relieve itching, redness and swelling while treating microorganisms that can contribute to the inflammation.
How the four ingredients work
Ear inflammation in pets can involve both irritated tissue and an overgrowth of bacteria or yeast. Hibix addresses these problems through four ingredients with different roles.
- Triamcinolone acetonide is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammatory signals in the skin. This helps relieve redness, swelling and itching, reducing the urge to scratch or rub the affected area.
- Nystatin is an antifungal medicine. It damages fungal cell membranes, allowing essential contents to leak out. Its role is to control yeast infections that can contribute to skin irritation and ear discharge.
- Fradiomycin sulfate, also known as neomycin sulfate, is an antibiotic that disrupts bacterial protein production. It acts against a range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria involved in superficial infections.
- Thiostrepton is another antibiotic that interferes with bacterial protein production. Its activity is mainly against Gram-positive bacteria, complementing the antibacterial coverage provided by fradiomycin.
What research shows about itch relief
The study Multiple-center study of reduced-concentration triamcinolone topical solution for the treatment of dogs with known or suspected allergic pruritus examined 103 dogs with allergy-related itching. After four weeks, 67% of dogs receiving triamcinolone achieved the study’s defined improvement in clinical scores, compared with 24% receiving the solution without the active medicine.
These findings support triamcinolone’s role in relieving allergic itching. The researchers tested a lower-concentration solution, so the results do not establish Hibix’s success rate or treatment duration.
What research shows about yeast-related ear inflammation
The study Therapeutic trials to evaluate the efficacy of topical Clotrimazole and Nystatin on clinical cases of otitis externa in dogs caused by Malassezia pachydermatis in district Lahore and its suburbs in Pakistan examined treatment for a yeast-associated outer-ear infection.
The authors reported 68% efficacy for nystatin, assessed through improvement in clinical signs and microscopic examinations during a 21-day follow-up. This provides evidence for nystatin’s role in treating yeast-related ear inflammation. The study evaluated a separate nystatin preparation in dogs, rather than Hibix or treatment in cats.
Package details: one tube
Each tube contains 7.5 ml of ointment for multiple applications. The amount used at each application depends on the size and location of the affected area.
Active components:
Each millilitre contains:
- Triamcinolone acetonide: 1.0 mg.
- Nystatin: 100,000 units.
- Fradiomycin sulfate: 2.5 mg, expressed as antibacterial potency.
- Thiostrepton: 2,500 units.
Therapeutic effect:
Hibix provides local inflammation treatment for cats and dogs with acute or chronic eczema, otitis externa and bacterial or fungal dermatitis. Its combination of ingredients controls inflammation and itching while treating accompanying superficial bacterial or yeast infections.
Dosage and administration:
The usual product instructions recommend application to the affected area one to three times daily, depending on the symptoms. Gently remove surface crusts or discharge as instructed by your veterinarian before application.
For ear treatment, follow the veterinarian’s demonstration of where and how much ointment to apply. Follow the prescribed frequency and duration; continuous use beyond a week is generally not recommended.
Prevent licking or scratching of treated areas, and wash your hands after application.
Contraindications and precautions:
Do not use Hibix in animals with a known allergy to its ingredients, suspected Cushing’s syndrome, or confirmed or possible pregnancy. Avoid contact with the eyes, nose and mouth.
Do not apply it inside an ear with a known or suspected ruptured eardrum. Stop treatment and contact the veterinarian if hearing changes, increased irritation or swelling develop.
Corticosteroids can be absorbed through the skin. Report unusual thirst, increased urination or vomiting during treatment, and do not extend the course without veterinary advice.
Pregnant women should avoid direct contact of medication with their skin.
