How does Iodine shampoo R help with skin and coat treatment in cats and dogs?
Iodine shampoo for pets
Iodine shampoo for dogs combines cleansing with the antiseptic action of povidone-iodine. It removes dirt, excess skin oils and body odour while reducing microorganisms on the skin and coat.
The shampoo is also suitable for cats when used according to the veterinary advice. Its lather helps distribute the active ingredient through the coat so that it reaches the skin.
How povidone-iodine works
Povidone-iodine combines iodine with a carrier called povidone. The carrier releases iodine, which damages microbial proteins, enzymes and cell membranes. These changes disrupt essential functions and kill microorganisms.
Povidone-iodine acts against a broad range of bacteria, fungi and many viruses. This activity explains its use as an antiseptic for animals. The shampoo base complements that action by loosening and washing away surface debris.
What research shows about skin antisepsis
The study Skin asepsis protocols as a preventive measure of surgical site infections in dogs: chlorhexidine–alcohol versus povidone–iodine compared skin preparation methods in 46 dogs undergoing surgery.
After the povidone-iodine protocol, samples from 74% of dogs showed no bacterial growth. This illustrates how povidone-iodine can reduce bacterial contamination on canine skin.
How shampoo differs from an iodine solution
An iodine solution for dogs is generally applied to a selected area, while shampoo is worked through wet fur and then rinsed away. The cleansing ingredients make shampoo useful when both the skin and coat need washing.
An iodine solution for cats may likewise be prescribed for local care. When a shampoo is recommended, thorough rinsing and preventing licking are particularly important.
Package details: 250 ml bottle
Each bottle contains 250 ml of shampoo for multiple washes. The amount required per bath depends on the animal’s size, coat length and coat thickness.
Active components: povidone-iodine 2%
Each 100 ml contains 2 g of povidone-iodine, equivalent to 0.2 g of available iodine.
Therapeutic effect:
- Cleansing of the skin and coat.
- Reduction of surface microorganisms.
- Removal of body odour.
Iodine shampoo for animals can support a veterinarian’s skin-care plan when cleansing and antisepsis are needed.
Dosage and administration:
Wet the coat thoroughly with lukewarm water. Apply enough shampoo to work through the fur and massage gently until it forms a lather. Rinse thoroughly, removing all shampoo residue, then dry your pet and keep it comfortably warm.
Follow your veterinarian’s instructions for bathing frequency and any required contact time.
Supervise your pet throughout bathing and prevent licking until the shampoo has been completely rinsed away. For cats, an Elizabethan collar may help prevent licking when recommended by the veterinarian.
Contraindications and precautions:
Do not use in animals with a known allergy to povidone-iodine or other shampoo ingredients. Open wounds may become irritated, so follow veterinary advice before washing damaged skin with this product.
Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, mouth and ear canals. If accidental contact occurs, rinse with clean water. Stop use and contact the veterinarian if redness, itching or irritation develops or worsens.
Tell the veterinarian about kidney or thyroid disease, particularly if repeated treatment over large areas is planned.
Do not mix the shampoo with other medicines. Wear gloves if your hands have cuts, and wash your hands after use. Store the bottle away from direct sunlight and heat, out of reach of children and pets.
