Dosage and administration of Menesit tablets 100 mg from Japan for Parkinson's disease and parkinsonian syndrome (levodopa/carbidopa)
If the patient has never taken levodopa before: for adults, the initial dose is started at 100-125 mg of levodopa at a time, 100-300 mg a day. Then the dose is increased by 100-125 mg every day or every other day up to maintenance dose of 200-250 mg of levodopa at a time, 3 times a day.
If the patient has been taking levodopa: In general, take at least 8-hour interval after taking levodopa alone. The initial dose is based on equivalent to one fifth of levodopa of the daily maintenance dose. Take it in 3 divided doses a day.
The dosage may be adjusted by the consulting doctor according to the symptoms. However, the daily dose of 1,500 mg of levodopa should not be exceeded. Please note that this preparation contains 100 mg of levodopa in a tablet.
How effective are Menesit tablets 100 mg from Japan for Parkinson's disease and parkinsonian syndrome (levodopa/carbidopa)?
For the last 50 years levodopa remains one of the most effective and the most prescribed medicines for Parkinson’s disease in the world. However, treatment with the levodopa only can provoke various side effects, especially motor complications. Menesit tablets combine levodopa with carbidopa for inhibiting peripheral metabolism of levodopa and making a greater proportion of peripheral levodopa to cross the blood–brain barrier for central nervous system effect. By this, the total amount of required levodopa is much less and the side effects are significantly weaker. Clinical studies showed that combined therapy significantly increases ON-time, affords greater functionality and is generally well tolerated (D. J. Brooks. “Optimizing levodopa therapy for Parkinson’s disease with levodopa/carbidopa/entacapone: implications from a clinical and patient perspective”. Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment, 2008, February, 4(1): 39–47).
