Medical effect: Losartan potassium tablets are effective for treatment of hypertension and diabetic nephropathy in the type 2 diabetes mellitus accompanied by hypertension and proteinuria.

Contraindications and precautions: do not use for the following categories of patients:

• pregnant or possibly pregnant women,
• breastfeeding women,
• patients with a history of hepatic or renal disorder,
• patients with a cerebrovascular disorder (cerebral stroke etc.) or a history of it.

If an allergic reaction occurs, stop taking the medicine and consult with your doctor. If you’re taking any other medication, please consult with your doctor before use.

As this medicine may cause dizziness due to excessive decrease in the blood pressure, be careful when operating in potentially hazardous activities such as driving a car.

Dosage and administration of Losartan potassium tablets 100 mg from Japan for hypertension and diabetic neuropathy (Cozaar)

For hypertension: for adults, take 25-50 mg of the active ingredient at a time, once daily. The consulting doctor may increase the dosage up to 1 tablet (100 mg) daily.

For diabetic nephropathy in the type 2 diabetes mellitus accompanied by hypertension and proteinuria: for adults, take 50 mg of the active ingredient at a time, once daily. The consulting doctor may increase the dosage up to 1 tablet (100 mg) daily according to the blood pressure level. If the patient has the potential to develop excessive hypotension, the initial dose is started at 25 mg.

Please note that this preparation contains 100 mg of the active ingredient in 1 tablet.

Losartan potassium is an angiotensin II receptor blocker acting on the AT1 receptor subtype. It works by blocking a chemical that causes blood vessels to tighten, subsequently relaxing blood vessels and decreasing the blood pressure. Also, Losartan potassium tablets reduce the deterioration of the renal function by reducing proteinuria.

Losartan potassium tablets are used to control the blood pressure in patients with hypertension and to lower the risk of strokes in patients with high blood pressure and an enlarged heart or left ventricular hypertrophy. Also, this medicine is effective for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy with an elevated serum creatinine and proteinuria (urinary albumin to creatinine ratio ≥300 mg/g) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and a history of hypertension. A research summing up the results of 15 years of losartan use showed that this medicine is effective, safe and has many unique characteristics not inherent to other angiotensin II receptor blockers (E.
