How effective are Acarbose tablets 50 mg from Japan for hyperglycemia (Glucobay, Precose, Prandase)?
Acarbose is a starch blocker that works by inhibiting enzymes such as glucoamylase present in the microvilli of the small intestinal mucosa. Also, this medicine inhibits α-amylase in pancreatic juice and saliva. By this, Acarbose tablets provide the following effects:
- suppress a rapid rise in blood glucose after meals,
- reduce the rate of digestion of complex carbohydrates,
- decrease blood glucose levels,
- decrease glycated hemoglobin level.
Who should take Acarbose tablets 50 mg from Japan?
Acarbose tablets are effective for preventing the hyperglycemia after meal in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 and prediabetes. Studies showed that this medicine is significantly more effective in patients eating a relatively high carbohydrate diet (Q. Zhu, Y. Tong et al. "Comparison of the hypoglycemic effect of acarbose monotherapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus consuming an Eastern or Western diet: a systematic meta-analysis". Clinical Therapeutics. 2013, June, 35 (6): 880–99). However, since acarbose is excreted through renal system, it is not suitable for patients with renal disorders.
