Bestron for ophthalmic use is an antibacterial eye medicine containing cefmenoxime hydrochloride. It is used for bacterial eye infections such as conjunctivitis and hordeolum, also called a stye, and may also be used for sterilization of the eye before and after eye surgery.
Eye infections can occur when bacteria multiply on the surface of the eye, eyelid margin, or surrounding tissues. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, discharge, eyelid tenderness, or a gritty feeling in the eye. By acting directly against susceptible bacteria, Bestron supports treatment when an ophthalmic antibiotic is needed for bacterial eye infection treatment.
How Does Bestron Work?
Cefmenoxime hydrochloride is a cephalosporin antibiotic. Its main action is to inhibit synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, an essential structure bacteria need to maintain their shape and survive. When cell wall production is blocked, the bacteria become weakened and can no longer multiply normally.
This mechanism makes Bestron useful in infections where bacteria are involved, including conjunctivitis and stye-related inflammation. Because the medicine is applied for ophthalmic use, the antibacterial action is directed to the eye area where treatment is needed.

In the Japanese study Clinical Characteristics and Bacteriological Profile of Moraxella Keratitis, researchers reviewed 30 culture-proven cases of Moraxella keratitis, a rare but potentially sight-threatening corneal infection.
In that study, patients were treated with combination ophthalmic therapy that included cefmenoxime together with other antibacterial components. All patients responded well to treatment, and no cases resulted in corneal perforation. The response was slow, with a mean treatment period of about 41.9 days, showing that severe bacterial keratitis may require persistent medical management even when the treatment is effective.
Why Local Antibacterial Action Matters
The eye is a delicate area where infection control needs to be precise. An ophthalmic antibiotic should act against bacteria while being suitable for use around sensitive eye tissues. Bestron’s active ingredient works by attacking a structure found in bacteria, not by masking symptoms alone.

Its antibacterial effect comes from cefmenoxime hydrochloride, which blocks bacterial cell wall synthesis and helps stop bacterial growth.
For patients who need an ophthalmic antibiotic with a clear antibacterial mechanism, Bestron provides targeted treatment for bacterial eye infection and surgical eye sterilization.
Therapeutic effect: treatment of eye infections such as conjunctivitis and hordeolum (sty), and for the sterilization for the eye before and after eye surgery
Dosage and administration: Dissolve 1 vial of powder in 5 mL of the attached solvent. Apply 1 to 2 drops at a time, 4 times a day. Your doctor may adjust the dosage depending on your symptoms.
To prepare the medicine, push up the upward arrow (↑) on the powder vial and remove the top. Unscrew the large white cap from the solvent bottle. Insert the bottle firmly into the vial, being careful not to spill the solvent. Shake well until the powder is completely dissolved. Pour the dissolved medicine back into the bottle, remove the vial, and close the bottle tightly.
Before using the eye drops, wash your hands with soap and water. Remove only the small pink cap. Apply the medicine without letting the tip of the eye dropper touch your eye.
After applying the drops, close your eyes for 1 to 5 minutes. Gently press the inner corner of your eye with your finger. Wipe off any extra liquid right away with clean gauze or a tissue.
If you need to use other eye drops at the same time, wait more than 5 minutes before applying them.
Contraindications and precautions: Store in a dry cool place, out of reach of children. Do not use for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Do not use for patients with contact lenses. Do not use for patients with a history or familial history of allergic symptoms such as bronchial asthma, rash and hives.
After dissolution, store in a cold place (1 to 15℃), and use within 7 days. Do not transfer this solution to any other bottle or container.
Do not expose to sunlight or heat. If allergic symptoms occur, discontinue use.
