Medical effect: Latanoprost ophthalmic solution is effective for the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

Contraindications and precautions: do not use for the following categories of patients:

• Patients with an eye implanted intraocular lens can’t use Latanoprost ophthalmic solution,
• Pregnant, possibly pregnant or breastfeeding women,
• Patients with an aphakia,
• Patients with an endophthalmitis (iritis, uveitis),
• Patients with a possible herpesvirus infection,
• Patients with a bronchial asthma or history of it.

Do not use an opened bottle that has been stored for more than 4 weeks after opening.

This medicine may cause a temporary iris pigmentation, increasing gradually. The withdrawal of the medicine will stop the progress of the change, but the color tone may still differ the untreated eye. If you notice the color change, consult with your doctor.

As this medicine may cause transient blurred vision after applying, patient should avoid operating machines, working at heights or driving a car until these symptoms recover.

If an allergic reaction occurs, stop using the medicine and consult with your doctor. If you’re taking any other medication or receiving any other treatment, you have to consult with your doctor before use.

Dosage and administration

Wash your hands before allying the medicine. Apply 1 drop at a time once a day. Avoid touching the surface of an eye with the dropper when applying. Wipe off any excess solution with a clean gauze or tissue.

If patient needs to use other eye drops at the same time, they need to wait for more than 5 minutes between the medicines.

If patient wears contact lenses, the lenses should be removed prior to application and can be reinserted after at least 15 minutes after applying the eye drops. Contact lenses may discolor.

How effective is Latanoprost ophthalmic solution 0.005% from Japan for glaucoma and ocular hypertension (Xalatan)?

Latanoprost is an ester prodrug activated to the free acid in the cornea, and an analog of prostaglandin acting as a selective agonist at the prostaglandin receptor. It works by increasing the sclera's permeability to aqueous fluid, increasing the outflow of aqueous fluid and lowering intraocular pressure. Latanoprost is absorbed well through the cornea, and its action lasts for at least 24 hours, allowing to use the ophthalmic solution only once a day.

Who should use Latanoprost ophthalmic solution 0.005% from Japan?

Latanoprost ophthalmic solution is effective for the treatment of ocular hypertension and open angle glaucoma. Studies showed that latanoprost is safe, generally well-tolerated, does not cause systemic adverse effects and is more effective than timolol, dorzolamide or brimonidine (A. Alm. “Latanoprost in the treatment of glaucoma”. Clinical Ophthalmology, 2014, 8: 1967–1985).
