How effective are Cholebine tablets from Japan hypercholesterolemia and familial hypercholesterolemia (colestimide, colestilan, BindRen)?
Cholebine tablets, containing the active component colestimide, are frequently prescribed for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication operates by utilizing its capacity to bind bile acids, effectively reducing serum cholesterol levels. The primary mechanism of action of Cholebine tablets centers on their ability to adsorb bile acids and cholesterol within the digestive tract. Colestimide serves as a bile acid sequestrant, functioning by attaching to bile acids in the intestinal lumen. Through the formation of non-absorbable complexes with bile acids, Cholebine hinders their reabsorption and promotes their elimination through feces. This triggers the liver to increase the utilization of cholesterol for the synthesis of new bile acids, consequently reducing the overall cholesterol content in the bloodstream.
Who should take Cholebine tablets from Japan?
Cholebine's efficiency in lowering cholesterol levels is well-established. By intercepting bile acids, it disrupts the enterohepatic circulation of these compounds, compelling the liver to rely on cholesterol reserves for generating more bile acids. As a result, this depletes the cholesterol supply within the liver and leads to the upregulation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors on hepatocytes. This heightened expression of LDL receptors on liver cells further contributes to the removal of LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream. In the context of familial hypercholesterolemia, a genetic disorder characterized by elevated LDL cholesterol levels, Cholebine tablets offer a localized method of intervention, making them a valuable complement to other lipid-lowering treatments. Cholebine tablets may also be used in combination with other medications.
