How effective are Enroclear 50 mg tablets for cats and dogs?
Enroclear tablets for pets
Enroclear contains enrofloxacin, an antibiotic used in veterinary medicine for bacterial infections of the skin, wounds, respiratory tract and urinary tract. Enrofloxacin for pets may be prescribed when other antibiotics have not provided an adequate response.
Tablets allow owners to give prescribed treatment at home without repeated injections. The amount administered depends on the animal’s species, body weight and the condition being treated.
How Enroclear destroys bacteria
Enrofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone group of antibiotics for animals. It blocks DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, two enzymes bacteria need to copy and organise their DNA. Disrupting these processes damages bacterial DNA and leads to cell death.
The scientific review Enrofloxacin—The Ruthless Killer of Eukaryotic Cells or the Last Hope in the Fight against Bacterial Infections?, published in 2022, explains this mechanism and examines the medicine’s antibacterial activity alongside its effects on animal cells. It describes activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.
Enrofloxacin’s antibacterial range includes E. coli, Staphylococcus, Klebsiella and Proteus strains. These organisms can cause infections in different parts of the body, which helps explain the medicine’s range of veterinary uses.
How the tablets reach infected tissues
After swallowing, enrofloxacin is absorbed from the digestive tract into the bloodstream and distributed into tissues, including the lungs, skin and kidneys. This allows oral treatment to reach internal infection sites.
Regular administration maintains the prescribed treatment as the body processes and eliminates the medicine between doses.
Package details: 100 tablets
The pack contains 100 tablets in blister sheets. The package quantity is separate from the number prescribed for an individual animal.
Active components: enrofloxacin
Each tablet contains 50 mg of enrofloxacin.
Therapeutic effect:
Oral enrofloxacin is used in veterinary practice to treat bacterial infections, including:
- Skin and soft-tissue infections, wounds and abscesses.
- Respiratory tract infections.
- Urinary and reproductive tract infections.
- Certain digestive tract infections and bacterial outer-ear infections.
Antibiotics for pets do not treat viruses.
Dosage and administration:
Enroclear’s usual oral dosing guidance is 5–10 mg/kg once daily for dogs and 5 mg/kg once daily for cats. For example, a 10 kg dog would receive 50–100 mg daily, equivalent to one or two 50 mg tablets. A 5 kg cat would require 25 mg daily.
Oral enrofloxacin schedules vary between products and conditions, so follow your veterinarian’s instructions for the dose, tablet portion and treatment duration.
Contraindications and precautions:
Do not use Enroclear in growing dogs under 12 months because enrofloxacin can affect developing joints. Additional caution is needed in giant breeds, which mature more slowly.
In cats, the daily dose should not exceed 5 mg/kg. Visual disturbances, including blindness, have been reported with enrofloxacin. Stop administration and contact the veterinarian promptly if your cat develops changes in vision.
Vomiting, reduced appetite or increased salivation may occur. Tell the veterinarian about previous antibiotic reactions, seizure disorders and any other medicines, particularly antacids, theophylline or anti-inflammatory pain medicines.
Enroclear contains fish-derived peptides, which should be considered for pets with fish allergies. Store the tablets at room temperature in an airtight container and keep them out of children’s reach.
